Historian Becky Nicolaides will discuss her recent book The New Suburbia: How DIversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles after 1945 (Oxford, January 2024). This groundbreaking study draws upon stories of whites, Black Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos from the LA region, and contrasts with the outdated portrayals of suburban life that are presented by Hollywood and the media.
Nicolaides, who spoke at the Lanterman House in 2022 about the history of racial segregation in this area, will include examples drawn from the neighboring communities of Pasadena and San Marino.
No reservations required, however seating is limited to 50.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley.
