2025 Lanterman research Internship Program

Applications are OPEN for the 2025 Research Internship program.

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation is seeking applicants for its “Research Internship Program”.   This program is an intensive four-week internship for high school students interested in preserving local history.

The program will run from June 3 through June 26 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lanterman House from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a small amount of homework, and the intern can expect to complete approximately 20 volunteer hours.

The focus of this year’s program will be the processing of a collection in the Lanterman House Archives. The intern will be trained in the care and handling of historic documents and photographs.  They will organize an entire historic collection and compile an inventory for it. Additionally, the intern may write a short local history article for publication.

Julie Yamashita, Lanterman House Archivist, will be the mentor of the internship program.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Intern must live in the Crescenta Cañada Valley or attend a high school in the 91011 zip code.

  • Open to students entering 11th through 12th grade only. This year, only one student will be selected for the program.

  • Intern must attend all of the meetings.  The meetings (dates below) are mandatory.

    • June 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, and 26, from 2pm to 4pm at the Lanterman House. We may be able to substitute a date in July if the intern can’t make one of the dates due to a pre-existing commitment.

  • Intern must be able to turn in documents and photos digitally, and print documents. A personal laptop is useful, but not required.

APPLICATION AND RECOMMENDATION FORMS

The application form and recommendation form are due by Monday, April 7 at midnight. Please note that the forms cannot be saved and completed later.

Please ask an adult who is not a relative (such as a teacher, manager, mentor or family friend) to complete our recommendation form. It is the candidate’s responsibility to make sure that the recommendation is submitted by April 7th at midnight.

New this year: Applicants who pass onto the 2nd round will be invited to the Lanterman House for a short interview. We will notify you via email if you’re invited to the 2nd round by Thursday, April 17.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: What if I can’t attend all the program dates?

A: Please check the schedule carefully.  The dates are scheduled far in advance and our staff arranges their schedule around them.   If you have a regular conflict with the dates, then this is not an appropriate internship for you. If you have a conflict with one or two dates due to pre-arranged summer plans, then we will work to accomodate you; however the intern hours can only be scheduled on a Tuesday or Thursday.

Q: Will there be homework?

A: There may be a small amount of homework. You will write the article on your own time. We estimate it will take no more than four hours.

Q: What if I don’t finish the program or complete the work?

A: If the project is not completed, then we will remove you from the program.

Q: How many hours will the internship take?

A: We estimate the internship will take about 20 hours to complete.  We will provide a service log for you to fill out and sign off on all your hours.

Q: How many interns will you accept to the program?

A: The intern program will be limited to one participant this year.

Q: If I previously interned at the Lanterman House, may I apply again?

A: We give priority to first-time applicants. However, we may be able to find another project for alumni of the internship program to work on - please reach out via email and ask. Previous alumni have helped out in the archives, with social media, and with local history articles.
